The English Education Department of Universitas Negeri Manado (UNIMA) is one of the oldest and most strategic study programs in the development of foreign language education in Eastern Indonesia. The history of this program is closely connected to the long journey of UNIMA as a teacher education institution.

The roots of English Education date back to the establishment of the Perguruan Tinggi Pendidikan Guru (PTPG) Manado in 1955, which later developed into part of the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) of Universitas Sam Ratulangi (UNSRAT), Manado branch. During this period, English language education was directed toward meeting the demand for English teachers in secondary schools in North Sulawesi and surrounding regions.

In 1965, the institution was officially transformed into the Institut Keguruan dan Ilmu Pendidikan (IKIP) Manado. Along with this transformation, the English Education Study Program experienced significant growth in terms of curriculum development, teaching staff, and student enrollment. The program became one of IKIP Manado’s leading programs in preparing professional and competent English teachers.

A major transformation occurred in 2000 when IKIP Manado was granted university status and became Universitas Negeri Manado (UNIMA). Since then, the English Education Study Program has been administered under the Faculty of Languages and Arts (FBS). This change encouraged the program to broaden its academic orientation beyond teacher education to include applied linguistics, literature, and Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL).

In response to ongoing developments, the English Education Study Program at UNIMA continues to regularly update its curriculum in line with national education policies, labor market needs, and global demands. The program is also actively involved in research, community service, national and international collaboration, and the strengthening of student competencies through teaching practice and various academic activities.

To this day, the English Education Study Program at UNIMA remains committed to producing graduates who are excellent, possess strong character, and are globally competitive, particularly in the field of English language education, while upholding local wisdom and national cultural values.
